How to assess your body fat percentage

Body fat percentage is the share of your body weight that is fat rather than muscle, bone, organs and water, and a usable home estimate needs only a tape measure, a scale, and your age and sex. Nothing at home measures fat directly: an equation fitted to a study population turns your shape into a percentage. The reference methods — DEXA, air-displacement plethysmography, hydrostatic weighing — are clinic and laboratory procedures. The home number is good enough to follow over months, not to argue about at one reading.

What you need

A tape measure, a scale, and five minutes:

  • Your sex and age: every equation is sex-specific, and age enters the BMI-based route.
  • Height without shoes, and weight from the same scale at the same time of day.
  • Waist circumference: men at the navel, women at the narrowest point of the torso.
  • Neck circumference, just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly down at the front.
  • Hip circumference at its widest, for women in the circumference method.

Measure on bare skin at the end of a normal breath out, tape snug but not compressing, and take each one twice. A careless tape moves the result more than a month of real change.

How the measurement works

The circumference method, developed for the U.S. Navy, works from the contrast between girths. Fat collects around the trunk while the neck stays comparatively lean, so the waist-to-neck gap, scaled against height, tracks fat. A wider waist pushes the estimate up, a thicker neck pushes it down, greater height lowers it. Women add the hips, where female fat also collects.

The second route, the Deurenberg equation, starts from body mass index and corrects it with age and sex: at the same BMI the estimate rises with age, as muscle is replaced by fat, and is higher for women than for men. Body fat assessment runs both routes and returns fat mass and lean body mass in kilograms. Coefficients are left out on purpose: they differ between published versions, and the arithmetic belongs to the calculator.

Because that route only translates weight and height, it inherits their blind spot: Body Mass Index (BMI) cannot tell muscle from fat, so a heavily trained person comes out too high.

How to read the result

There is no consensus clinical cut-off for body fat percentage. The labels you see quoted — essential, athletic, fitness, average — come from fitness organizations, not a diagnostic standard, and differ between sources. Any band must be sex-specific: women carry more essential fat than men at every age, which is biology, not a worse score. The direction of travel carries the information.

What it does not tell you

It does not tell you how much fat you have, but how much fat people with your dimensions had, on average, in the population the equation was fitted to. Against DEXA, individual errors of several percentage points are ordinary, and grow at the extremes: very lean, very heavy, elderly and highly muscular bodies are estimated poorly. The circumference equations were developed in military personnel, and fat at a given body size varies across ethnic groups.

It says nothing about where the fat sits. Visceral fat around the organs behaves differently from fat under the skin, and two people at an identical percentage can carry very different risk. Nor does it describe the lean side beyond a total: strength and bone density are separate.

Bioimpedance scales infer fat from how easily a small current crosses the body, so hydration, a recent meal or workout, even foot temperature can shift it by more than a month of real change. And a percentage is not a diagnosis: it says nothing about your blood pressure, glucose, lipids or liver.
