Magnesium and Healthy Aging

What magnesium does in the body
Magnesium matters for healthy aging because adequate intake is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and all-cause mortality, and the daily reference target is roughly 300–400 mg, best met from food rather than pills. Magnesium is a mineral involved in more than 300 enzyme reactions: energy production, protein and DNA synthesis, muscle and nerve function, and the regulation of blood glucose and blood pressure. A long-running shortfall shows up in exactly those systems, and the link to age-related disease is what makes magnesium interesting for longevity.
Most people fall short
A diet dominated by refined and ultra-processed products is poor in magnesium, because milling strips it out of grains. Absorption also declines with age, and some medications (diuretics, proton pump inhibitors) increase losses. Clear deficiency on a blood test is not that common, but suboptimal intake is widespread. What the research on magnesium and health shows
The observational data are fairly consistent:
- higher magnesium intake is associated with a lower risk of Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke;
- and with a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes (magnesium takes part in how insulin works);
- and, in meta-analyses, with lower all-cause mortality.
One caveat is important: these are associations. People who get plenty of magnesium usually eat better across the board. So the emphasis belongs on the overall diet, not on a single tablet. The daily reference target is on the order of 300–400 mg. A balanced diet (along the lines of the Mediterranean pattern) usually covers it.
Do you need a supplement?
Not everyone does. A magnesium supplement is reasonable with a confirmed deficiency, in certain conditions (frequent muscle cramps alongside a low magnesium level, for example), or on a doctor’s recommendation. Forms such as citrate or glycinate absorb better than oxide. An excess from supplements has a laxative effect, and in kidney disease magnesium can accumulate, so clear any supplement with your doctor. Frequently asked questions
Does magnesium help with insomnia and stress?
There is evidence of a mild effect on sleep and relaxation, especially when intake is low, but magnesium is not a sleeping pill and the effect is modest.
Which form of magnesium is best?
Citrate and glycinate absorb better and are gentler on the gut than oxide. For most people, though, the diet matters more than the form of the supplement.
Can you take too much magnesium?
From food, essentially never. From supplements, an excess causes loose stools, and in kidney disease magnesium can build up to dangerous levels, which is why the dose and a doctor’s advice matter.
