Cognitive age is an estimate, in years, of how old your thinking performs once your answers on memory, attention and speed tasks are scored against age norms, and the questionnaire version needs only a quiet room, a screen and a few minutes. That is the version most readers can actually get. The research version that reads a brain age off an MRI or an EEG needs a scanner you cannot book for yourself, and clinical screens such as the MoCA or the MMSE need an appointment and are scored in points, not years. In every case the number matters less than the gap between it and your calendar age.
What you need
- A quiet room and five to twenty uninterrupted minutes.
- A device you are comfortable using. Unfamiliar hardware slows your responses, and the test reads that as slower thinking.
- Your glasses and hearing aids, if you use them.
- Your age, and usually your years of education and your sex, because the norms adjust for those.
- An honest note on your state: sleep, caffeine, alcohol, illness, sedating medication.
- No blood test, no fasting, no scan.
How the measurement works
A battery samples several domains rather than one: episodic memory (recalling a list after a delay), working memory (holding and using information), executive function (switching rules, ignoring distractors), and processing speed. Questionnaire-style instruments also ask about sleep, activity and mental engagement, which track with measured performance in cohort studies.
Raw performance is then standardized against a normative sample matched for age, and usually for education and sex. The tool reads back the age at which that level of performance is average and reports it as your cognitive age. More items recalled and faster, more accurate responses push the estimate younger; slower reactions, missed targets and false alarms push it older. A neighboring instrument, Mental age: the age of your mind, frames the same idea around outlook and habits rather than task performance. It rests on different inputs, so do not average the two.
How to read the result
There are no standardized bands here. Any source publishing a crisp cut-off in years has invented it, because the value depends on the battery and the population it was normed against. Read the output in three parts: the age figure, the gap against your calendar age, and the per-domain scores, usually percentiles.
Direction of travel matters more than the value. A gap of a few years either way sits inside the noise of one sitting, since sleep, caffeine, time of day and test familiarity move performance about that much. A gap that is large, that reappears under similar conditions, or that widens over years is worth attention, as is one domain sitting far below the rest.
Hold conditions still when you repeat it, and leave enough time that you are not simply remembering the items. If the result comes with real difficulty, such as missed appointments or concern from people around you, see a clinician rather than take another online test.
What it does not tell you
It is not a diagnosis. It cannot separate ordinary cognitive aging from mild cognitive impairment or dementia, and it says nothing about cause. A poor score is often not brain aging at all: sleep debt, depression, anxiety, alcohol, thyroid disease, B12 deficiency, sedating medication and untreated hearing loss all pull scores down, and most are treatable.
Norms carry culture with them. Batteries are validated in particular populations, so taking one in your second language, or far from the education level of the norming sample, shifts the number for reasons unrelated to brain health. Practice moves it the other way: repeating a battery improves the score through familiarity alone, which is how people most often persuade themselves a supplement worked.
A normal result is weaker reassurance than it feels, because Cognitive reserve lets people with more education and more complex work keep testing normally while pathology accumulates. And providers are not comparable: compare your figure only with your own earlier result on the same tool.
