Metabolic age estimates how old your energy metabolism looks next to the average person of your age, from body composition and daily habits instead of a blood test. Nothing in it needs a clinic, a lab or a scanner: height, weight, a tape measure and an honest account of how you sleep, move, drink and eat are enough. The one input that is hard to get precisely at home is body-fat percentage, and how you obtain it sets the accuracy of the result.
What you need
- Age and sex, plus height and weight measured in the morning, before breakfast, in light clothing.
- Waist circumference, with a soft tape at the end of a normal breath out, level with the top of the hip bone.
- An estimate of body-fat percentage from a bioimpedance scale, skinfold calipers, a tape-based formula, or a DEXA scan, the accurate option and the only one needing an appointment.
- Your training week: cardio sessions, resistance sessions, a daily step count.
- Usual sleep duration, smoking status, alcohol per week, and a fair description of your diet.
With no body-fat figure, measurements you can take yourself still give a usable one: Body composition assessment turns height, weight and circumferences into fat mass and fat-free mass.
How the measurement works
It runs in two steps. First it estimates how much energy you burn at rest, the Basal metabolic rate (BMR), from your size, sex, age and, where available, fat-free mass. Then it compares that figure with what is typical at each adult age for your sex. If your resting burn and body composition resemble an average 34-year-old’s, the tool reports a metabolic age of 34.
The inputs push in predictable directions. Fat-free mass, meaning muscle, bone and organs, drives resting energy use, so more of it at the same weight pulls the estimate down. A high body-fat percentage and a large waist relative to height push it up. Training pulls it down, resistance work especially; short sleep, smoking, heavy drinking and an ultra-processed diet push it up. Age enters twice: as your reference point, and because resting expenditure drifts down with age.
The arithmetic is not worth doing by hand: the equations differ by sex, activity level and body-fat input. Metabolic age by lifestyle and body composition takes the whole set at once and returns the estimate alongside the energy expenditure it came from.
How to read the result
The output is one age in years, and the only part worth reading is its gap from your real age. There is no agreed cut-off for a bad gap: every scale and calculator uses its own equations and reference population, so numbers from different tools are not comparable. Compare only with your own earlier result, measured the same way.

What it does not tell you
Metabolic age is not a clinical biomarker. There is no standard definition, no consensus equation and no validated reference band, so two scales can differ by years for the same person. Underneath sits a predictive BMR equation fitted to population averages, least reliable at the extremes of body size, in older adults and in the very muscular. Bioimpedance readings also shift with hydration, meal timing, recent exercise and the menstrual cycle.
It measures nothing about aging biology. No DNA methylation, glucose, lipids, liver enzymes or blood pressure enters it, so it cannot detect insulin resistance, fatty liver or high LDL cholesterol; a flattering metabolic age sits comfortably alongside untreated prediabetes. It has not been validated against disease or mortality endpoints the way cardiorespiratory fitness has.
It can mislead in both directions. A heavily trained person reads young mainly because muscle raises resting burn, while someone slim with little muscle and much visceral fat can read as unremarkable. Half the input is self-reported, and self-reports lean optimistic. Treat it as a trackable summary of habits, not a screening test.
