How to calculate your fitness age

Fitness age asks how fit you are compared with other people your age, and returns the answer as a number of years: the chronological age at which your fitness would be unremarkable. The everyday version needs no laboratory and no gym — a tape measure, a resting pulse, your height and weight, and an honest account of a typical training week. It matters because cardiorespiratory fitness is among the strongest predictors of mortality. What comes back is an estimate, not a measurement.

What you need

Nothing that needs an appointment:

  • Your age and sex — the reference curves are sex-specific.
  • Your waist circumference, taped against bare skin at the end of a normal breath out.
  • Your height without shoes and your weight from the same scale.
  • Your resting heart rate, counted for a minute after sitting quietly, or a wearable’s overnight low.
  • A truthful account of your usual week of exercise: how many sessions, how long, how hard.
  • Optional, if your version asks: timed sit-to-stands, push-ups, a single-leg stand.

No blood draw is involved; a page that asks for a lipid panel is calculating a different age.

How the measurement works

Step one predicts your maximal oxygen uptake without an exercise test. Coefficients differ between published models and are left out here on purpose; the directions do not. The estimate rises with training that is more frequent, longer and harder, and falls with age, a larger waist relative to your frame, and a higher resting heart rate.

Step two inverts the reference table: your predicted fitness is compared with the average for your sex at every age, and the age where the two meet is your fitness age. Broader versions score more than aerobic capacity alone. Fitness age: the age of your physical fitness works across six factors — endurance, strength, balance and body composition among them — and runs both steps from the inputs above.

Two caveats. Height and weight are a crude stand-in for muscle and fat, and Body composition assessment tells you more than one ratio can. And the reference standard for step one is a graded exercise test with a mask and metabolic cart, which needs a laboratory or clinic; if you hold a measured value, feed it in with Physical form age: your VO₂max rather than estimating it twice.

How to read the result

The gap between the number and your real age is the message. There are no validated bands: no threshold says that a fitness age eight years above your own carries a specific risk, and a calculator showing one has invented it.

Average here means the general population, not people in good shape, so landing on your own age is a modest result. Repeat under the same conditions every few months; the trend matters more than one reading.

What it does not tell you

It is an estimate of an estimate. Aerobic capacity predicted from a questionnaire and a few body measurements carries real error for any one person, and converting it into years makes it look more precise than it is. A shift of a year or two between sittings is usually noise.

The reference population is not universal: the best-known non-exercise model came from a predominantly white Norwegian cohort; norms differ between populations. At the extremes — very old, very sedentary, highly trained — such models flatten out. Two inputs are also easy to distort: self-reported activity is reliably inflated, and resting heart rate is moved by beta-blockers, caffeine, alcohol, poor sleep and fever. A drug that holds your pulse down flatters the score.

Most of all, fitness is one axis of aging. A young fitness age says nothing about your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, liver, kidneys, bone density or cognition, and it is not an epigenetic clock — it describes capacity today, not the rate at which your cells age. It also grants no clearance to train hard: any chest pain, breathlessness or fainting during exertion needs a clinician.
