Fitness age

Fitness age is your cardiorespiratory fitness expressed as an age: the age at which your level of fitness would be average for someone of your sex. If a 55-year-old man has the aerobic capacity of an average 42-year-old, his fitness age is 42. It is a translation, not a separate measurement: one fitness number restated on a scale people grasp instantly. It is motivating, and easy to over-read: a fitness age is a percentile dressed up in years, not a reading of how fast your body is aging.

What it measures

Underneath almost every version sits VO₂max (maximal oxygen uptake) — how much oxygen your body can take in and use at maximum effort. Your value is compared against a reference population of the same sex, and the age whose average matches yours is returned as your fitness age.

The input arrives one of three ways. A graded exercise test with gas analysis is the reference standard and the only direct measurement. Non-exercise calculators estimate the same value from questions alone; the best known, built by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology from the HUNT population study, uses sex, age, waist circumference, resting heart rate and training habits. Fitness watches take a third route, inferring capacity from heart rate against pace or power during ordinary runs. Some consumer Fitness age tools also fold in strength, balance or body composition alongside endurance.

There is no clinical cut-off and no comparability between brands. Each calculator carries its own reference population, equation, floor and ceiling, so the same person can be given noticeably different fitness ages on the same afternoon. Most tools will not report a value below young adulthood, because aerobic capacity peaks there. Track one tool over time and ignore the rest. One quirk: capacity declines with age in untrained adults — often quoted at around ten percent per decade — so simply holding your VO₂max steady lowers your fitness age year after year.

Why it matters for longevity

Fitness age borrows its evidence from the measure beneath it. Cardiorespiratory fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance) is one of the strongest predictors of death from any cause in large cohort studies, and low fitness is associated with risk on the scale of established factors such as smoking and diabetes. Those are observational findings, so they show association rather than proof of cause.

Fitness age itself has been studied far less on its own, and no trial has tested whether lowering the number changes outcomes. Its real value is communication: people act on “your fitness age is 63” in a way they never act on a raw milliliters-per-kilogram figure.

What changes it

Two halves move independently. The calendar half rises whatever you do. The fitness half responds to training faster than almost any other longevity marker. Aerobic work is the lever: easy, conversational sessions build the base, while short hard intervals tend to raise maximal capacity fastest in training studies. Gains show up within weeks to a few months, and fade on a similar timescale if you stop.

Body composition also counts, because capacity is expressed per kilogram of body weight, so losing fat mass raises the number without your heart changing at all. With questionnaire-based calculators the inputs are the levers directly: waist circumference, resting heart rate, and how often and how hard you train. Genetics set the starting point and how much you gain, which is why two people on the same plan can end up years apart.
