Processing speed is how quickly the brain takes in information, works out what it means and produces a response — the raw pace of thinking, measured in fractions of a second rather than in what you know. It is a core cognitive domain, alongside memory and executive function, and the one that slips earliest, often from early adulthood onward. Because almost every timed task depends on it, a slower engine makes memory and reasoning look worse than they are. What it measures
There is no blood test for it. Speed is read off timed tasks that are deliberately easy, so what limits you is pace, not knowledge:
- Symbol coding — the Digit Symbol Substitution Test and the Symbol Digit Modalities Test, matching digits to symbols against the clock. The score is how many you finish in the time allowed.
- Trail Making, Part A — connecting numbered circles in order; the score is seconds taken.
- Reaction time — pressing a key as soon as a target appears; both the average and its trial-to-trial variability matter.
These tests track how efficiently signals travel between brain regions. Slowing goes with loss of white matter integrity and small vessel disease, which is why speed is the domain most sensitive to vascular problems in the brain.
Typical values
A raw score means nothing on its own — it depends on the test version, the time limit and the norm sample. Results are converted to standardized scores against people of your age and education.

Research definitions of impairment usually fall between one and one and a half standard deviations below the matched norm, but the cut-off differs by test and norm sample, so a score flagged as low on one report can sit in the normal range on another. Practice effects are real: repeat a test soon and you score better without thinking faster.
Why it matters for longevity
It matters twice over. First, it props up the rest of cognition: in the processing-speed account of cognitive aging, much of the age difference in reasoning and recall disappears once speed is accounted for. That is why slowing shows up on tests of Working memory and on measures of Fluid intelligence long before anything is wrong with memory itself.
Second, it predicts hard outcomes. In large population cohorts, slower and more variable reaction times are associated with higher all-cause mortality, independently of age, smoking and blood pressure — slowing looks like a general readout of how well the body is holding together. Low symbol-coding scores are also associated with later mild cognitive impairment and dementia. This is observational data, so association is not proof of cause. Day to day, the stakes are driving, medication errors and falls.
What changes it
Chronological age is not negotiable: it slows the system, and nothing has been shown to reverse that. Much of the rest is reversible, and worth checking before you assume decline. Short or broken sleep slows reaction time within a night or two. Alcohol, sedatives, antihistamines, opioids and anticholinergic drugs blunt speed, and the effect adds up across a medication list. Hypothyroidism, B12 deficiency, anemia, depression and uncorrected vision or hearing loss all show up as slowing on a test never designed to detect them.
Over the longer run, protecting the brain’s small vessels is the main lever: treating high blood pressure, keeping glucose and lipids in range, not smoking. Regular aerobic exercise is associated with better speed and slower decline, with modest gains in trials. Targeted speed-of-processing training improves the trained task and holds for years, but transfer to other abilities is limited and claims that it prevents dementia are disputed; brain-training apps mostly make you better at the app.
