Laboratory tests

Laboratory tests are analyses of blood, urine, stool, saliva or tissue that measure the amount or activity of a specific substance in the body. A clinician orders them to check a suspicion, to monitor a condition that is already known, or to screen someone who feels well. Almost every result comes back as a number printed next to a reference range. That range is a statistical description of a healthy population, not a line between sick and healthy, so a single value just outside it is a reason to look further rather than a diagnosis.

What it measures

A sample is collected, transported and run on an analyzer that reports a concentration, a count or an activity level. The usual groupings are hematology (a complete blood count: red cells, white cells, platelets), clinical chemistry (glucose, creatinine, electrolytes, liver enzymes, a lipid panel), immunoassays for hormones, vitamins and antibodies, urinalysis, microbiology and culture, and molecular or genetic assays. The reference range beside your result is normally derived as the central 95 percent of values measured in a defined healthy reference group. That has a consequence people rarely hear: on any single test, roughly one healthy person in twenty falls outside the range by chance, and the more analytes you order at once, the more likely at least one flag appears. Ranges also differ by laboratory, by assay and instrument, and by sex, age and pregnancy status. Units differ by country too, so the same blood glucose value appears as mg/dL in the United States and mmol/L in much of Europe. Comparing reports from different labs without checking the range and units printed on each is a common way to misread a result.

What happens before the analyzer matters too. Fasting status, time of day, hydration, a hard workout the day before, alcohol, an acute infection and how the sample was handled can all shift a value enough to change how it looks against the range.

Why it matters for longevity

Routine panels are the cheapest widely available window on how organs are actually working, and they often move before symptoms do. Impaired glucose handling, kidney function decline, dyslipidemia and low-grade inflammation are usually detected on paper years before anyone feels them, which is why lab work forms the backbone of Health screening programs. The evidence linking individual analytes to mortality and disease risk is largely observational: values are associated with outcomes across large cohorts, and correcting a number on a report is not the same as improving the outcome it predicts.

What changes it

Two different things move a lab result: your physiology, and the measurement itself. On the physiology side, diet quality, body weight, aerobic and resistance training, sleep, alcohol, smoking and prescribed medication all shift analytes such as glucose, glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, liver enzymes and inflammatory markers, usually over weeks to months rather than days. On the measurement side, repeating the test at the same laboratory under the same fasting conditions removes most of the noise, and a genuinely abnormal result is normally confirmed on a second sample before anything is decided.

Some contributors are not levers at all. Age, sex and genetics set where your baseline sits, and a person can fall slightly outside a published range for a lifetime without anything being wrong. What matters clinically is the trend across several measurements, read with your symptoms and history, not one number in isolation.
